Beginning with the environmental movement of the 1960s, air quality in Europe and the United States has increased markedly. However, emerging industrial powerhouses of India, China, and Brazil continue to belch billions of tons of contaminants into the air and over their population. It is common knowledge that the air quality in Beijing was so poor that many factories suspended production for several weeks prior to the 2008 Olympics. Hopefully, these countries can learn from the mistakes of Europe and the United States and clean their air sooner rather than later.
