Similar to the experience with air, many countries continue to struggle with water quality. Some observers of planetary health, in particular Jared Diamond, make cogent arguments that competition for such basic resources as that of water may prove to be highly destabilizing to many societies. Others, such as Lovelock in his studies of global climate change, believe the depletion of water supplies on certain continents will lead to global instability. Again, some of the answers may be found in advanced technology, such as desalinization. But part of the answer must be found in restoring a natural, healthy balance to watersheds, especially reforestation of ravaged areas and the protection of existing forests in undeveloped regions.
